Hyundai Motor and Waymo have entered into a strategic partnership for the integration of Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous technology, the Waymo Driver, into Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 electric vehicles. This partnership will see a significant volume of Ioniq 5 EVs equipped with Waymo’s self-driving technology over multiple years to support Waymo’s robotaxi business. Waymo, known for operating the only commercial robotaxi service in the U.S., Waymo One, aims to enhance its fleet with the addition of the Ioniq 5 vehicles. Initial testing is expected to begin by late 2025, with the vehicles becoming available to Waymo One riders in the following years. The financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed, but Waymo will purchase and own the vehicles. This collaboration marks the first phase of a partnership that may expand in the future, according to José Muñoz, Hyundai’s chief operating officer. The Ioniq 5 is also being utilized by autonomous vehicle startup Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, with no impact on the Waymo partnership.
