The latest employment report for September showed unexpectedly strong growth in various sectors of the economy. The largest contributions came from leisure and hospitality, with 78,000 new jobs, and health care and social assistance, with 71,700 new positions. If private education is included in the health-care sector, it would have been the top-growing area for the month.

In the hospitality industry, food services and drinking places saw a significant increase of 69,000 jobs, surpassing the average monthly gain over the past year. Government and construction also showed positive growth, adding 31,000 and 25,000 jobs, respectively. Professional and business services saw a gain of 17,000 jobs, a noteworthy change from recent months of job losses.

The report indicated broad-based job growth, but also noted a 5.3% increase in the percentage of workers holding multiple jobs. Despite the overall positive outlook, there were declines in manufacturing and transportation and warehousing sectors, albeit with fewer than 10,000 job losses in each category.
