MLB’s New National Strategy: Charting a New Course



Major League Baseball is experiencing a new direction following the implementation of rule changes and a renewed focus on showcasing player talent, according to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. Manfred, along with former MLB stars CC Sabathia and Albert Pujols, discussed the league’s shift towards a more national approach at CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan sports business event. The MLB aims to expand its reach beyond regional boundaries by increasing its national presence through broadcast rights and game accessibility.

The MLB’s recent initiatives come in the wake of the bankruptcy reorganization of Diamond Sports, the largest owner of regional sports networks in the country. Some teams have already transitioned away from Diamond Sports, opting to have MLB produce and broadcast their games instead. The focus is now on creating and promoting star pitchers in addition to position players like Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and Juan Soto. With changes to rules regarding pitcher usage and game strategy, the league is actively working to enhance the visibility and impact of starting pitchers.

In recent years, Major League Baseball has implemented rule changes to increase the excitement and competitiveness of the game. Limitations on pickoffs, modifications to the size of bases, and adjustments to defensive shifts have led to a rise in stolen bases and more dynamic gameplay. Additionally, the league is committed to diversifying its audience by recognizing the historical significance of the Negro Leagues and actively engaging with underserved communities to attract a broader demographic of players and fans.
