Japan PM hopeful Ishiba considers potential corporate tax increase, reports Kyodo
Shigeru Ishiba, a former Japanese defense minister and a prominent contender in the ruling party’s leadership race, suggested that there is room for increasing corporate taxes during a recent webcast, as reported by Kyodo News. “There are firms that can handle a higher tax burden, and I believe they should contribute a bit more,” Ishiba commented. On the other hand, Shinjiro Koizumi, a former Japanese environment minister also vying for the Liberal Democratic Party leadership, proposed the implementation of a carbon tax to avoid potential taxes on trade with Europe, where such a tax is being considered, as per the report. However, Sanae Takaichi, the minister responsible for economic security and another candidate in the LDP leadership race, voiced opposition to tax hikes for the next few years, stating that taxes should not be increased until there is progress towards a price stability target where demand surpasses supply. The LDP, with a majority in parliament, is scheduled to select a new leader on September 27 to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
