Distance Technologies, a startup from Finland, has secured 10 million euros ($11.1 million) in funding from GV, Alphabet’s venture capital arm, and other investors. The company specializes in developing technology that transforms any transparent surface into an augmented-reality display, eliminating the need for bulky hardware like mixed reality headsets or AR glasses. This innovation allows users to see 3D digital objects overlaid on the surface they are viewing effortlessly and elegantly.

The technology behind Distance works by using tracking technology to determine eye focus and project the correct light field onto the surface. By adding optics layers to LCDs, Distance can beam images to where the user’s eyes are looking, creating separate light fields for each eye with infinite pixel depth. This capability enables a life-size field of view in various scenarios, from automotive to aerospace applications.

GV’s investment in Distance stems from the potential to pioneer next-generation user interfaces, particularly in the automotive and aerospace sectors. While commercializing mixed reality presents challenges due to the high cost of devices, Distance’s software-driven approach sets it apart from other AR HUD developers by covering the entire transparent surface.
