Three years after the tragic incident on the set of “Rust,” the film is scheduled to debut at the Camerimage Festival in Poland next month. During the filming of the western movie in October 2021, actor Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Legal battles ensued following the incident, with prosecutors attempting to charge Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter. The charges were dropped twice, with the most recent dismissal in July due to evidence mishandling by the prosecution.
The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March and is currently serving a prison sentence. Despite a motion to dismiss the charge following Baldwin’s mistrial, the request was denied by the judge. The Camerimage festival will feature a screening of “Rust” followed by a panel discussion on safety protocols on set and how the production continued after the tragedy. Director Joel Souza, who was injured in the incident, will be part of the panel.
The festival, focused on cinematography, will take place from November 16-23 in Toruń, Poland. Participants will pay tribute to Halyna Hutchins and discuss her contributions to the industry.
