Former film producer Harvey Weinstein has been indicted on new charges by a New York City grand jury. The specifics of the charges are currently under seal, with prosecutors informing a judge in Manhattan criminal court about the development. It was earlier reported that a grand jury had been convened to hear from women with new accusations against Weinstein.
Weinstein, 72, who recently underwent heart surgery and was not present in court, has faced allegations of sexual assault and harassment from over 80 women. He has consistently denied the claims, stating that the encounters were consensual.
In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sex act, but the conviction was overturned in April due to procedural errors. The retrial is scheduled for November, with Weinstein remaining in custody.
Apart from the New York case, Weinstein was also found guilty of rape and sexual assault in a 2022 trial in Los Angeles, where he received a 16-year sentence. His legal team is currently appealing this conviction.
